STMicroelectronics and IAR Systems, a world leading provider of software development tools for embedded systems, announced today development tool support for ST’s SPEAr® family of microprocessor units (MPUs). This extends IAR Systems development tool support for ST products, which is already established with support for ST’s STM32 and STM8 microcontroller families.
SPEAr is a family of embedded MPUs that offer state-of-the-art architecture, silicon technology and intellectual property, targeting networked devices used for communication, display and control. Highly integrated, the SPEAr family are 32-bit ARM microprocessor based devices and are aimed at cost-sensitive applications requiring significant processing and connectivity capabilities with low power consumption.

IAR Systems has added support for SPEAr processors in the IAR Embedded Workbench, a reliable and powerful development tool for building and debugging embedded applications. Selected customers have already started designing software for SPEAr processors using this important tool. The new integration of SPEAr support allows any customer to quickly get a software project up and running using a reliable and proven solution that helps minimize project risks.

“The work we are doing with IAR further demonstrates ST’s commitment to significantly enlarge the suite of development tools available for the SPEAr embedded microprocessor family, in addition to increasing the overall SPEAr offering,” said Loris Valenti, Group VP and General Manager, Computer Systems Division, STMicroelectronics.

“SPEAr in combination with IAR Embedded Workbench will be very attractive for companies demanding flexibility, high performance and low power in their design of Embedded Networked Systems,” said Stefan Skarin, Director of sales, IAR Systems. “Thanks to the close collaboration between ST and us, I think we together can provide a very appealing solution for our customers”.
