Silanna’s Plural ADC Family has been shortlisted for the Electronics Excellence Awards under the Semiconductor category.
Silanna’s Plural is a family of factory-configurable high-performance ADCs. Unlike traditional ADCs, performance characteristics are set in firmware, not silicon. This enables larger fab runs, and quantities to be held in stock without the risks of traditional manufacturing models.
As a result, our cost structure is significantly lower than what ADI, TI, and other competitors can offer. It also removes uncertainty from the supply chain, with no need to ever end-of-life a niche product. And with stock held (rather than manufactured to order) lead times reduce from being months to just weeks.
Finally, the design incorporates an onboard DSP, enabling further savings by cutting the need for an FPGA to run downstream processing. They are available in 10-, 12-, 14- and 16-bit resolutions and with sample rates from 5 to 250Msps.
ADCs are used across an array of industries. Traditional manufacturing techniques set SKU KPIs in silicon, with one mask set per ADC. Except for a few SKUs, manufacturers cannot pre-manufacture/store large runs without large risks, forcing long lead times. If an individual SKU is deemed too niche to be profitable, the manufacturer will destroy the mask set, and end of life the product even if essential to a customer’s board.
These same pressures have also forced a wave of consolidation, and the industry is now effectively a duopoly. Plural is not subject to the same economic model and has been created for companies seeking to significantly lower costs and to ensure more secure supply chains. The SKUs developed have been primarily created for developers of industrial, communications, medical, defence and test-and-measurement equipment.
