Emerson’s NI Nigel AI has been shortlisted for the Electronics Excellence Awards under the Software category.
NI Nigel AI is purpose-built artificial intelligence for professional test and measurement. Its 2026 authoring capabilities expand its role from an AI advisor to an AI author, a tool that generates code and test sequences directly within familiar NI software environments.
In LabVIEW 2026 Q3, an engineer can describe a measurement or test function in natural language and Nigel can generate a LabVIEW VI. It draws on NI’s test and measurement expertise, product documentation, and an understanding of the user’s project context. The authoring workflow also validates the generated code. This brings AI-assisted authoring to graphical programming. Nigel supports structures, clusters, synchronisation, signal processing, and established LabVIEW design patterns, and can generate measurement code using NI and third-party devices.
In TestStand, Nigel can turn a test specification into a sequence, creating LabVIEW or Python steps and matching them with existing code modules where appropriate. Where modules do not yet exist, it can create placeholder code modules for engineers to edit and complete their tests.
Nigel’s wider capabilities also extend across the LabVIEW+ Suite, including InstrumentStudio, FlexLogger, and VeriStand. Engineers can use AI-assisted workflows across application development, interactive measurement, sensor-based data logging, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
The practical benefit is less time spent translating requirements into code and configuring test workflows. Emerson’s internal benchmarking across representative engineering workflows indicates that the new capabilities can reduce the time and effort required to develop and deploy test systems by up to 50%.
