In this latest edition of the Electronic Specifier Insights podcast we speak to Sam Bennett, New Product Introduction (NPI) Manager at Harwin. Sam will discuss his journey at the Southampton-based company and his involvement in the design and development of Harwin's new Pitch Power Connector family.

To complement its 1mm diameter terminal pins, Harwin now offers a range of 1.75mm diameter options. These pins will be suitable for use with larger sized sockets where a single connection is required.

Harwin has significantly raised the power levels that its pitch power connector product portfolio can support with the introduction of the Kona series. These 8.5mm pitch connectors’ contacts are capable of delivering 60A of current. This means that applications such as battery charging can be addressed without having to split the current across multiple contacts.

To address safety and mission critical applications, where continued data integrity is of paramount importance, Harwin now offers additional cable assembly services for its Gecko product series. Produced on-demand, these assemblies provide greater resilience against ambient electro-magnetic interference (EMI) and crosstalk from neighbouring wiring.

Harwin has started production in its new manufacturing facilities at the Portsmouth headquarters in the South of England. Providing an additional 1,200m² of factory floor, the new facility is enabling the company to quickly and significantly scale up production of its high reliability (Hi-Rel) connectors to meet market requirements.

Harwin has recognised the exemplary achievements of five individuals with the announcement of its 5 Star Awards winners for 2020. The series of awards celebrates those whose work within the component supply channel has surpassed expectations and achieved distinction in progressing Harwin’s business around the world.

Harwin has expanded its services relating to the Gecko-MT high-reliability (Hi-Rel) connector series. Enabling significant reductions in weight and space, Gecko-MT robust 1.25mm-pitch components add two or four 10A-rated power contacts to the standard 2A-rated 8 Gecko signal contacts, addressing data and power delivery simultaneously.

Combines the 1.25mm pitch Gecko signal connector system with mixed technology layouts, adding 10A power contacts to the range. The smallest and lightest mixed-layout connector available for high performance applications, Gecko is the ideal choice when SWaP matters most (increase miniaturisation, decrease weight, add or improve power options, and either lower cost or get the best possible value for cost).

Harwin has made its supply chain more streamlined and responsive by extending the scope of its Datamate Mix-Tek high-reliability (hi-rel) connector series. OEMs can now purchase cable housings for these 2.00mm and 4.00mm pitch connectors without contacts fitted, rather than being restricted to a small number of pre-defined kits.

Harwin has announced that it now offers both its Datamate J-Tek and Gecko high-reliability (Hi-Rel) connectors with FPC assemblies attached for situations where there is little space above the board surface.

The UK government announced last week that the country-wide lockdown would be extended for at least a further three weeks in order to manage the coronavirus crisis. It is uncertain at present how ministers can get industry going again to kickstart the economy without incurring a second infection wave. But what does this mean for UK manufacturers?

Harwin has confirmed that its Archer Kontrol 1.27mm pitch board-to-board connectors support data rates of up to 3Gbits/s. Compatible with Ethernet speeds up to 2.94Gbits/s, these connectors are optimised for modern industrial infrastructure.

Assisting engineers dealing with EMI/RFI issues in their PCB designs, Harwin has just announced the introduction of three new shielding cans. Supplied in a tape-and-reel format, these cans increase the company’s existing range of EMC products. The new can dimensions are 10x10mm, 15x10mm and 30x10mm, all with a three millimetre profile height and 0.15mm thickness material.

Harwin continues to show its credentials in respect to the further promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to younger generations. In order to ensure that students attending Havant & South Downs College (HSDC) have access to the hardware necessary to support their ongoing education, it is donating a robot arm - a package worth more than £30,000.

Harwin has continued to extend the scope of its high-reliability (hi-rel) connector portfolio through the introduction of mixed-layout versions of the company’s popular Gecko-SL series. By complementing the data contacts with two or four power contacts (in power/data configurations of either 1+8+1 or 2+8+2), the Gecko-MT products enable significant space and weight reductions in electronic hardware.
