Following the industry's longest reaching DVI(TM)/HDMI(TM) TMDS equalizer, the MAX3815, Maxim Integrated Products introduced the MAX3815A, a 2.25Gbps automatic cable equalizer for HDMI v1.3 TMDS applications. The MAX3815A is capable of compensating for 0 to 35m of 24 AWG HDMI cable or 0 to 22m of 28 AWG HDMI cable, running TMDS data at rates up to 2.25Gbps. The device is compatible with HDTV resolutions of 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 1080p with 30- to 36-bit color (Deep Color). It also supports VGA to WUXGA computer resolutions.
The adaptive equalizer in each data channel automatically applies the optimum equalization needed to equalize the cable. A manual equalization mode is also available for specific in-cable applications. For driving cables, the TMDS output currents can be set to permit differential back terminations in order to absorb cable connector reflections. Alternatively, the device can be operated in a low-power mode, in which it switches the output swings to one half the DVI specification. This mode is useful in shorter-reach, chip-to-chip communications.

The MAX3815A features three differential data channels, one clock channel, and an LOS (loss-of-signal) output, which automatically squelches the outputs when a clock signal is not present.

This device operates from a 3.3V supply and consumes 0.6W. Packaged in a lead-free, 7mm x 7mm, 48-pin TQFP, the MAX3815A is specified over the 0 degree Celsius to +70 degrees Celsius commercial temperature range. Prices start at $5.99 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation board complete with HDMI input/output connectors and I2C acceleration (MAX3816A) is available. Please contact the factory for details.
