CSR announced that its embedded connectivity software CSR Synergy for Android has been enhanced with full support for Bluetooth low energy (v4.0). This, the world’s first commercial implementation of Bluetooth low energy on Android, unlocks the potential for an exciting variety of innovative new consumer use-cases for Android-based smartphones and tablets, and connectivity to an ever growing new ecosystem of small sensors and ultra low power devices. CSR is demonstrating a number of these Bluetooth low energy use-cases at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona 14th – 17th February 2011, (Hall 1.0 Stand 1E51).
/> The ‘Plug and Play’ nature of CSR Synergy for Android embedded software means that OEMs can now more quickly deliver feature-rich, differentiated handsets, allowing consumers to enjoy a smooth and intuitive Bluetooth low energy user experience with all the attendant power and flexibility of the Android operating system.

“Bluetooth low energy promises nothing short of a revolution in how we interact with gadgets, by opening up the possibility of everything being connected all the time,” comments Ahmet Alpdemir, Senior Vice President for CSR's Handset Business Unit. “The mobile phone is at the heart of this revolution. Most phones have Bluetooth integrated, and it’s a very short step to offer Bluetooth low energy. Your phone can easily become your remote control, your security alarm, your health/fitness monitor or your personal shopper. It will be capable of alerting you via your watch of an incoming call, of reading identity tags, helping you find your keys, turning the kettle on when you get home, or any number of other functions. Once again we’re about to see a short-range wireless technology completely change the world, and the ways in which we interact with the technology in it.”

One of the use-cases being shown on CSR’s stand will be a demonstration of a single-mode Bluetooth low energy watch interacting with a dual-mode mobile phone. This will illustrate some of the exciting new services now possible via Bluetooth low energy with CSR Synergy for Android. These include instant and detailed alerts to incoming calls or messages through the watch, time sync between the watch and the phone, the ability to activate an alarm to find a lost phone, and proximity alarms to alert you if you leave a device behind somewhere.

The health and wellbeing domain will also see many of the earliest applications of Bluetooth low energy, and several specialised profiles have been set up to reflect this. These include the ability to monitor heart rate, glucose levels, blood pressure, weight, oxygen levels, or to set in train an emergency alert.

Kanwar Chadha, Chief Marketing Officer, CSR commented: “Android is fast becoming a leading operating system in smartphones. CSR Synergy for Android’s rich feature set offers Android designers a real competitive advantage, helping them to differentiate their offering, tap into the Bluetooth low energy ecosystem through the intelligence and collaborative nature of the software, and to enable enhanced end-user experiences. Thanks to the plug-and-play nature of CSR Synergy for Android we can significantly reduce integration time, speeding overall adoption of Bluetooth low energy by the market.”

CSR Synergy for Android is a complete plug-and-play connectivity package for the latest Android 2.3 platform (aka Gingerbread) and includes support for Bluetooth, FM, Wi-Fi and GPS.

CSR Synergy for Android drastically simplifies the integration of multiple wireless technologies, speeding time-to-market and reducing development cost by including everything from low-level transport drivers, advanced connectivity stacks to high level UI add-ons for Android. The generic CSR Synergy for Android interface also means developers can innovate with their own applications on top of CSR’s use-cases, bringing a richer feature set to end-users more quickly.

CSR is also committed to supporting ongoing updates to the Android platform including the new Android 3.0 (aka Honeycomb) currently being previewed, ensuring that every Android customer can enjoy the benefits of Bluetooth low energy.

CSR Synergy for Android can be used in conjunction with CSR’s best-in-class CSR8000 dual-mode Bluetooth hardware platform with low energy support to deliver a robust and fully-featured Bluetooth low energy experience. Compatible accessories can be developed using CSR µEnergy single-mode Bluetooth low energy silicon to deliver a complete and engaging user experience.

It is expected that CSR’s platforms will be behind many of next year’s must-have low energy products. CSR is strongly engaged with many customers in this exciting technology area, and predicts that finished Android devices containing its Bluetooth low energy products will hit the shops later this year.

CSR Synergy for Android 2.6, the CSR8000 platform, CSR µEnergy and all other CSR Bluetooth low-energy-enabled products are available now.

For further evidence of the power of Synergy for Android in a wireless environment, feel free to come to CSR's stand at MWC (Hall 1.0, Stand 1E51). CSR will be showing off a demo with NEC Casio (also announced by CSR today) that utilises its Bluetooth low energy technology, and demonstrates some of Bluetooth low energy's exiting use-cases on Android devices.
