TRaC, the largest UK test and certification services supplier, announces that it now holds full accreditation under the newly-released standard EN 61010-1:2010, “Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use: General requirements.”
TRaC has secured Accreditation (by UKAS, the UK Accreditation Service) to provide testing and certification in accordance with this major standard update. Under the provisions of IECEE, TRaC has added the corresponding – latest – edition EC 61010-1 to its international approvals capability.

EN 61010-1:2010 was issued late in 2010; it sets out safety requirements not only for all measurement equipment designed for laboratory use, but also for certain industrial process control equipment. EN 61010-1:2010 is the first major standards revision in this area for almost a decade and takes account of many changes that have taken place in certification practice over that interval.

For example, it incorporates a presumption of conformity with the Low Voltage Directive (LVD); and certain medical equipment covered by the In-Vitro Directive (IVD) also comes within its scope, as do many products governed by the General Product Safety Directive or the Health and Safety at Work Act. TRaC, as the leading services provider in the field, has extensive experience – and holds all of the relevant accreditations – in all of the related Standards and Directives.

The scope of EN 61010-1:2010 is considerably wider than that of its predecessor, 61010-1:2001. It goes far beyond just the pure electrical aspects, although those, too, have been expanded. In the revised standard, for example, account must be taken of all the possible ways an item of equipment might be mis-used, so the standard covers risk assessment, and also takes in mechanical hazards. Also added are environmental considerations, both in terms of the effect of the environment on the equipment, and vice-versa.
