How to use Fly-Buck DC/DC converter topology
Learn how and when to use Fly-Buck DC/DC converter topology for generating an isolated supply. Texas Instruments applications engineer Vijay Choudhary explains what Fly-Buck topology is, the operating principles, and the advantages it has over other solutions.
DC-DC converters exceed patient protection specs
The newly launched RECOM REM3, REM6 and REM10 medical DC-DC converters for patient-connected applications exceed the latest IEC 60601-1 (3rd edition) specifications for 2MOPP patient protection. The converters are available in the UK from Dengrove Electronic Components. The 3W, 6W and 10W modules feature reinforced insulation for 250VAC working voltage, 5kVAC input-to-output isolation and 8mm creepage and clearance, meeting or exceeding the...
6kW power supplies are available in a 1U rack-mount package
The SL series of programmable power supplies, manufactured by Magna-Power Electronics, has been expanded to include 6kW models. The series is now made up of 70 models at power levels of 1.5, 2.6, 4 and 6kW, all in a 1U, 1.75" high rack-mount form-factor.
Yole explores the power electronics industry
According to Yole Développement, Wide Band Gap (WBG) technologies are almost ready to be used by power electronics integrators. The question is how? Industry players have identified many module packaging challenges. Yole has analysed their insights, and is now presenting an overview of the issues.
Power modules provide standby consumption of 300mW
MTM Power has announced its PMAS10 series Print Power modules with low idle power consumption, an increasingly important criterion in light of the current combination of dwindling resources and spiralling energy costs. The standby power consumption of the PMAS10 is reduced below 1W, typically to around 300mW.
Chargers & inverters add layer of safety to nuclear centre's supply
AEG Power Solutions has announced that it has been selected to provide the power system for the Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL), the world’s largest neutron research facility. Following the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011, a decision was taken to improve the safety of the ILL site, including construction work with improved backup protection to the electrical supply.
4-140V buck converter delivers up to 400mA continuous output
Linear has announced a 140V input-capable high efficiency buck converter that delivers up to 400mA of continuous output current. Operating from an input voltage range of 4-140V, the LTC7138 is suitable for telecomms, industrial, avionics and automotive applications. The convertor utilises a programmable hysteretic mode design to optimise efficiency over a broad range of output currents.
TVS device protects USB interfaces on portable devices
A high-performance, low capacitance TVS device, which replaces multiple discrete components while providing complete VBUS surge and ESD protection for USB data and ID lines, has been released by Semtech. Measuring 2.0x1.8mm, the RClamp1255P has a capacitance of less than 0.5pF on D+, D- and ID pins.
Power MOSFETs provide reduced RDS(ON), output & gate charges
Infineon Technologies has added 80 and 100V variants to its OptiMOS 5 power MOSFET portfolio. These next-gen Power MOSFETs are optimised for high switching frequencies, especially used in synchronous rectification applications for telecomms and server power supplies, as well as in industrial applications such as solar, low voltage drives and power adapters.
Automotive N-channel MOSFETs help reduce EMI noise
Expanding its line-up of automotive N-channel power MOSFETs, Toshiba Electronics Europe has introduced two devices: a 100V, 160A MOSFET and a 40V, 200A MOSFET. The TK160F10N1 and TK200F04N1L can contribute to EMI noise reduction in applications such as electric power steering, DC/DC converters and load switches.
