HCD, the Letchworth-based contract electronics manufacturer, has recently completed the installation of a mezzanine floor at its Letchworth facility, increasing operational floor space by 50 per cent. The move is in response to increased sales and also to enable the company to deliver more services.

Explains founder MD, Gene Holmes: “We are seeing an upturn in orders as UK companies look to source locally rather than go to previously low-cost regions such as Eastern Europe or China. Of course, currency fluctuations are making UK manufacture a very attractive option at the moment, but also many companies now prefer to keep manufacturing local, for reasons of control, communications and speed of response.”

HCD did investigate moving into other premises, but chose instead to add the extra space at its main facility. Holmes: “We like the idea of maintaining all operations under one roof – especially as we are now adding extra manufacturing operations such as cable assembly and box build.”
