Nu Horizons Electronics has announced ex-stock availability of the Exar XR20V2170 (single-channel) and XR20V2172 (dual-channel) universal asynchronous receivers and transmitters (UARTs) with integral I2C/SPI interface and RS232 transceivers. The devices reduce bill of materials, component count and cost when connecting microcontroller-based systems to the outside world via RS232 links. The I2C or SPI interface is software selectable and the RS232 pins are ESD protected.
In both devices the full-featured UART has a fractional baud rate generator and transmit and receive FIFOs of 64 bytes. Each has 16 selectable transmitter and receiver FIFO trigger levels, automatic hardware and software flow control, general purpose I/Os and a full modem interface.
The single channel XR20V2170 version supports data rates up to 250 Kbps while the dual-channel XR20V2172 version operates at up to 1 Mbps.

Both versions feature an automatic sleep mode to minimize power consumption, making them suitable for portable, battery-powered applications, as well as factory automation and process controls. Both meet true EIA/TIA-232-F standards.

The XR20V2170 comes in a 40-QFN package and operates from 2.97V to 3.63V. The XR20V2172 has a 64-QFN package with an operating voltage range of 3.3V to 5.5V.
