Xilinx has announced that its Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC family has been assessed as SIL 3, HFT1 capable, according the IEC 61508 functional-safety specification, by Exida, functional safety certification agency. This assessment means product developers can build new high performing systems including Artificial Intelligence (AI) for safety-critical applications using Xilinx’s feature rich, highly integrated single-chip MPSoC family, with the assurance of IEC 61508 functional-safety certification up to Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL 3).

Xilinx launch Alveo, a portfolio of powerful accelerator cards designed to dramatically increase performance in industry-standard servers across cloud and on-premise data centers. With Alveo, customers can expect breakthrough performance improvement at low latency when running key data center applications like real-time machine learning inference as well as video processing, genomics, and data analytics, among others. FPGAs achieve 5X/16X performance-per-watt over GPUs
Xilinx and SK Telecom (SKT) have jointly announced that SKT has deployed Xilinx FPGAs as their artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators in its data centre. The Xilinx Kintex UltraScale FPGAs are now running SKT’s automatic speech-recognition (ASR) application to accelerate NUGU, its voice-activated assistant. SKT achieved up to five times higher performance in ASR applications when compared to GPUs, and more importantly, 16 times better performance-per-watt.

Adaptable computing product category launched
Xilinx has announced a new product category called Adaptive Compute Acceleration Platform (ACAP) that goes far beyond the capabilities of an FPGA. An ACAP is a highly integrated multi-core heterogeneous compute platform that can be changed at the hardware level to adapt to the needs of a wide range of applications and workloads. An ACAP’s adaptability, which can be done dynamically during operation, delivers levels of performance and performance per-watt that is unmatched by CPUs or GPUs.

Xilinx chosen for next-gen FPGA cloud acceleration
At the Computing Conference, Xilinx announced that Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, has chosen Xilinx for next-gen FPGA acceleration in their public cloud. As the largest cloud provider in China, Alibaba Cloud offers high-performance, elastic computing power to over two million customers. Based on Xilinx FPGAs, the new 'F2' instances give Alibaba Cloud customers access to acceleration for data analytics, genomics, video processing, and machine learning workloads.

Software defined development environment now available

Xilinx has announced that its software defined development environment, SDAccel, is now available on Amazon Web Services (AWS) for use with Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) F1 instances. Amazon EC2 F1 instances provide reconfigurable, custom-hardware acceleration with 16nm Virtex UltraScale+ FPGAs enabling customers to meet the demands of compute-intensive workloads like data analytics, video processing and machine learning.
