Qualcomm's CES 2017 announcements
At CES 2017, Qualcomm has made various announcements on its latest Snapdragon processor as well as developments in its IoT, 5G and Automotive offerings. These announcements are summarised below, alternatively for those lucky enough to be in Las Vegas you can visit Qualcomm at their stand at CES in North Hall, booth #5609.
Companies collaborate on 5G NR trials
It has been announced that Qualcomm Technologies, Ericsson, and SK Telecom, plan to conduct interoperability testing and over-the-air field trials based on 5G New Radio (NR) as standards are being developed based on specifications in 3GPP.
Qualcomm begins commercial sampling of 10nm server processor
Qualcomm through its subsidiary, Qualcomm Datacenter Technologies, announced commercial sampling and conducted a live demonstration of the world’s first 10nm server processor. As the first in the Qualcomm Centriq product family, the Qualcomm Centriq 2400 series has up to 48-cores and is built on the most advanced 10nm FinFET process technology.
New IoT technology trialled first in Europe
The new Internet of Things (IoT) technology LTE-M (also known as LTE Cat-M1) has successfully been trialled by KPN, the first European operator. LTE-M (Machine Type Communication) is a new technology that can be rolled out on the existing 4G network. The LTE-M technology is complementary to the recently introduced LoRa network of KPN as well as to existing Machine-to-Machine (M2M) uses cases on 4G.
Prototype system to test, demonstrate and trial 5G spectrum
Qualcomm Technologies has introduced its first 5G New Radio (NR) spectrum sharing prototype system and trial platform. The industry is designing 5G NR to get the most out of spectrum available across all spectrum types –licensed, unlicensed and shared spectrum – and across spectrum from lower bands (sub-6 GHz) to high bands in the mmWave range.
