At CES 2017, Qualcomm has made various announcements on its latest Snapdragon processor as well as developments in its IoT, 5G and Automotive offerings. These announcements are summarised below, alternatively for those lucky enough to be in Las Vegas you can visit Qualcomm at their stand at CES in North Hall, booth #5609.

  It has been announced that Qualcomm Technologies, Ericsson, and SK Telecom, plan to conduct interoperability testing and over-the-air field trials based on 5G New Radio (NR) as standards are being developed based on specifications in 3GPP.

Qualcomm through its subsidiary, Qualcomm Datacenter Technologies, announced commercial sampling and conducted a live demonstration of the world’s first 10nm server processor. As the first in the Qualcomm Centriq product family, the Qualcomm Centriq 2400 series has up to 48-cores and is built on the most advanced 10nm FinFET process technology.

The new Internet of Things (IoT) technology LTE-M (also known as LTE Cat-M1) has successfully been trialled by KPN, the first European operator. LTE-M (Machine Type Communication) is a new technology that can be rolled out on the existing 4G network. The LTE-M technology is complementary to the recently introduced LoRa network of KPN as well as to existing Machine-to-Machine (M2M) uses cases on 4G.

Qualcomm Technologies has introduced its first 5G New Radio (NR) spectrum sharing prototype system and trial platform. The industry is designing 5G NR to get the most out of spectrum available across all spectrum types –licensed, unlicensed and shared spectrum – and across spectrum from lower bands (sub-6 GHz) to high bands in the mmWave range.

  Steve Mollenkopf, CEO of Qualcomm, will give the keynote address at CES 2017 which will run from 5th-8th January in Las Vegas.

Qualcomm Technologies introduced the Snapdragon 600E and 410E processors at electronica 2016, for embedded applications in many verticals such as digital signage, set-top-boxes, medical imaging, point of sale systems, industrial robotics, and other Internet of Things (IoT) related applications.

  In the largest semiconductor acquisition of all time, smartphone chipmaker Qualcomm has acquiried NXP Semiconductors for $47bn, beating July’s acquisition of ARM Holdings by Softbank.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon connected camera portfolio includes a comprehensive suite of camera platforms featuring enhanced hardware and software capabilities.

The subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, Qualcomm Technologies, has introduced three Qualcomm Snapdragon processors aimed at supporting enhanced user experiences and connectivity for high performance and high volume mobile devices. The Snapdragon 653, Snapdragon 626 and Snapdragon 427 processors are designed to deliver higher levels of processing performance than their predecessors. 

The subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, Qualcomm Technologies, has secured design wins among the industry's leading module Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) based on its MDM9206 LTE modem for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. These designs are an addition to the more than 100 designs announced last June using the company's MDM9x07 LTE IoT modems. 

  At the 4G/5G summit Qualcomm Incorporated announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, has worked closely with Telstra, Ericsson and NETGEAR on the world's first Gigabit Class LTE mobile device, and the first Gigabit Class LTE commercially ready network. 

A subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, Qualcomm Technologies, has announced the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem, making Qualcomm the first company to announce a commercial 5G modem chipset. It is designed to support Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) that are building the next generation of cellular devices, as well as aid operators with early 5G trials and deployments.

Qualcomm announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, has successfully made the world's first over-the-air connection via MulteFire using LBT. MulteFire is a next-gen mobile cellular technology based on LTE that operates solely in unlicensed spectrum. As Jonny McClintock, Director of aptX Sales and Marketing, Qualcomm aptX explains, Bluetooth is widely used as a wireless connection for audio applications including phones, media players and wearables, removing the need for cables. The combination of the AD2P protocol and frame-based codecs used in many Bluetooth stereo audio implementations has led to excessive latency and acoustic performance significantly below CD quality. 

Qualcomm Technologies and SK Telecom have announced the first over-the-air technology demonstration of eLAA (Enhanced Licensed Assisted Access) and LAA (Licensed Assisted Access) that utilises both licensed and unlicensed spectrums at SK Telecom's Corporate R&D centre in Bundang, South Korea.
