Murata Manufacturing has been named a Top Innovator in the Digital category of the CLEPA Innovation Awards for its development of an UltraSonic Clearing Device (USCD) designed to improve the reliability of cameras and sensors in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles.

The technology aims to address a persistent challenge for vehicle sensors: performance degradation under adverse weather conditions such as rain, fog, dust, snow or ice. Murata’s USCD uses ultrasonic vibrations to clear lenses of debris and moisture, while simultaneously heating the outer surface to prevent condensation, frost or ice build-up.

Current solutions, such as spray-based cleaning systems or energy-intensive heaters and air blowers, can be complex, bulky, and require regular maintenance. By contrast, Murata says its USCD offers a more integrated approach, eliminating the need for water tanks and additional wiring, which could reduce vehicle weight and potentially extend the range of electric vehicles.

CLEPA, the European Association of Automotive Suppliers, said the award highlights Murata’s technological excellence and the potential of the USCD to improve vehicle safety and sensor reliability, even as the system remains under development.

Murata has cautioned that specifications and the final design of the device may change before commercial release.

Murata, founded in Japan in 1944, is a global manufacturer of electronic components, including capacitors, sensors, and power supply modules, with European offices across the continent.
