World’s smallest ambient light sensor for wearables
Measuring just 1.145x1.66x0.32mm, the TSL2584TSV Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) from ams is claimed to be the world's smallest. In display management applications, automatically controlling the backlight intensity with an ALS ensures the best possible user experience while extending battery life. The TSL2584TSV’s outline and height are approximately half the size of competing ALS devices.
Hall-effect current-sensor ICs in high-isolation package
The ACS722 and ACS723 Hall-effect current sensor ICs from Allegro MicroSystems Europe are now available in a high-isolation SOIC16 package. The low-profile surface-mount package is ideal for space constrained applications while also saving costs due to reduced board area, yet provides a 4800 V RMS isolation rating: the highest available from Allegro’s family of surface-mount current sensor ICs.
Sensor module premieres at Nuremberg show
A low-power USM-MEMS-VOC sensor module from Unitronic that enables an especially rapid detection of different Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the air will make its debut at SENSOR+TEST 2015 in Nuremberg (19th to 21st May). The Unitronic Sensor Module (USM) measures just 15x17x3mm.
Printable, wearable temperature sensor provides fever alerts
The device, developed by research groups lead by Professor Takayasu Sakurai, Institute of Industrial Science, and Professor Takao Someya, Graduate School of Engineering, both University of Tokyo, combines a flexible amorphous silicon solar panel, piezoelectric speaker, temperature sensor, and power supply circuit created with organic components in a single flexible, wearable package.
Pressure sensor is compatible with corrosive liquid & gas
A small profile, media compatible, piezoresistive silicon pressure sensor has been introduced by Measurement Specialties, which is now part of TE Connectivity. The rugged 85BC is suitable for use in harsh applications including medical instruments, process control, fresh and waste water measurements, partial vacuum gas measurement, pressure transmitters and tank level systems.
LVDT sensors stand up to harsh environments
Hoffmann – Krippner is offering a wide range of LVDT sensors from its German partner company INELTA for contactless and wear-free path and position detection. The LVDT sensors operate on the principle of the differential transformer and are suitable for use in many applications, such as medical technology, industrial, seafaring, in testing facilities, machinery construction, special purpose machines and agriculture.
Starter kit enables easy touch sensor MCU design
Renesas has announced a touch sensing starter kit, Y-RX113CAPT01, for the RX113 Group of 32-bit MCUs, which incorporate capacitive touch sensor IP that enables high sensitivity, high noise immunity, and excellent water resistance. The kit offers greater flexibility in developing HMI applications that require touch capability in rugged environments, such as home appliances and industrial machinery.
Fault-tolerant MCUs suit safety-critical in-car use
Utilising an in-house 40nm embedded Flash process, ST Microelectronics has added several devices to its multi-core MCU family, aimed at making cars safer. The automotive MCUs combine ISO 26262 ASIL-D compliance, encryption for security and increased memory size for the storage of vital programmes and data, strengthening ST’s line of fault-tolerant MCUs for demanding in-car applications.
Magnetostrictive sensor offers precise positioning
MTS Systems' subdivision MTS Sensors has introduced a robust, high performance magnetostrictive position sensor, using its innovative Temposonics technology. The ET sensor is very well suited to deployment in applications with high temperature environments, and can deliver up to 0.005mm resolution when used in combination with a suitable controller.
Digital pressure sensors offer high performance from 5-60psi
All Sensors Corporation of Morgan Hill, California, has announced its DLV Series Low Voltage Digital Pressure Sensor, based on the popular DLVR Series of pressure sensors. This device series offers design engineers excellent performance over middle pressure ranges of 5 to 60psi compared to the DLVR low pressure ranges of 0.5 to 60 in H2O.
