Phihong has released its next generation, power on demand 24-port midspan, which provides eight ports of IEEE 802.3at 33.6 watts per port and 16 IEEE 802.3af 15.4W per port in a single 1U chassis. Designated the POE576U-24AFAT, the midspan is ideal as a solution for sites where a variety of power levels are required, such as a system with several high-power access points, full-function security surveillance cameras, and a number of VoIP phones. Models are available that support SNMP network management as well as an external redundant power supply for five nines reliability.
This 'hybrid' midspan is fully compatible with both IEEE802.3af and IEEE802.3at devices, so it offers the ultimate flexibility for any organization looking to implement Power-over-Ethernet, said Keith Hopwood, vice president of marketing, Phihong USA. The midspan, which provides full power to every port simultaneously, is a cost-, time-, and space-saving solution in the implementation of wireless access points and security systems because it combines two PoE midspans into one and replaces dual hard-wiring methods while offering superior power performance and network design flexibility.

With both 15.4-watt and 33.6-watt ports, the midspan ensures the user will not run out of power while leaving ports unused, and also that the switch will not have to be replaced in order to add higher-power devices to expand the network.

The 24-port midspan provides full power of 576W for 10/100/1000 Base-T and requires no traditional power management, which is typically found in PoE switches to manage the overall power budget, eliminating the need to calculate and manage device priorities. Because it is Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) -capable, it enables remote monitoring and camera reset without onsite service personnel.

The POE576U-24AFAT has safety and protection systems designed to meet the IEEE 802.3 standards, including detection, disconnect, and overload control. Over-temperature protection allows the midspan to automatically shut down without being damaged and the outputs are equipped with short-circuit protection. Also, in case of over-voltage, the outputs will shut down without any permanent damage to the midspan or powered device.
