The world is becoming increasingly interconnected, and the Internet of Things (IoT) is at the forefront of this revolution.

With this in mind, DECT NR+ has emerged as the first non-cellular 5G standard that is driving a new age of IoT with its secure, standardised mesh networking for widespread device connectivity. DECT NR+ is a reliable, decentralised, and highly scalable technology that supports applications across Industrial IoT, smart metering, and smart cities.

One of the key features of DECT NR+ is its self-healing capabilities, which ensure that even if a node in the network fails or is removed, the network remains operational. This technology is also ultra-low latency, meaning that there is no noticeable delay in the communication between connected devices. Additionally, the dedicated spectrum used by DECT NR+ ensures that interference from other wireless technologies is kept to a minimum, resulting in more reliable and efficient communication.

DECT NR+ uses the 1.9GHz global license-exempt band (1880-1930MHz). KYOCERA AVX’s antenna 1001013, now optimised for DECT NR+ at 1.9GHz, provides exceptional performance in a small footprint as it does not cover the rest of the cellular bands. This FR4 antenna is only 15 x 3.3 x 3.2mm and provides exceptional performance with an average efficiency of 80%. 1001013 utilises KYOCERA AVX’s patented Isolated Magnetic Dipole (IMD) technology to deliver a unique size and performance combination. The IMD antenna technology provides superior RF field containment, resulting in less interaction with surrounding components. This reliable design allows 1001013 to be used in off-ground and on-ground (over metal) environments, making it perfectly suited for DECT NR+ exclusive applications.

KYOCERA AVX offers a wide range of off-the-shelf versatile antennas, covering both NR+ and cellular bands, in different form factors and manufacturing technologies, like SMD FR4 antennas 1004795 and P822601, ensuring wide-ranging, advanced IoT connectivity. These antennas offer tuning pads for optimising the antenna length for different environments, maximising the performance of each final product.

This new cutting-edge technology is employed in the newest Nordic DECT NR+ capable SiPs, such as nRF9161, nRF9131, and nRF9151. KYOCERA AVX, as official Design Partner of Nordic Semiconductor, has reference designs available (e.g. nRF9161 DK) and supports customers in implementing antennas and validating the connectivity of their IoT devices.
