Substrate coating improves LED lighting

Henkel is targeting LED lighting applications with a reflective coating that exhibits minimal material ageing to help LED luminaires maintain performance and extend their brightness lifetime. Called StabiLUX, it is a high-reflectance white coating that maximizes the usable light from surface-mounted or Chip-On-Board (COB) LED emitters.

StabiLUX is a silicone-free formula designed to maintain high reflectance even after moving through harsh die attach and printed circuit board (PCB) assembly processes. In testing and in the field, StabiLUX has been proven to retain up to 95% reflectance after undergoing three solder reflow cycles and after 2,000 hours of operation at 150°C. StabiLUX is also UV- stable, displaying minimal performance degradation after prolonged exposure to LED light or sunlight.

As compared to liquid photoimageable (LPI) solder mask alone, StabiLUX maintains its reflectance for a longer period of time.  After solder reflow, solder mask reflectance often reduces to 80% or less, while StabiLUX maintains nearly all of its initial reflectance following thermal processing.  In addition, StabiLUX is the only one-part, silicone-free, re-usable reflective coating on the market.  After mixing, most two-part coatings are not re-usable, whereas the unused portion of StabiLUX can be re-frozen for future use. 

StabiLUX is applied on top of the solder mask and is designed for use with FR4 PCBs and THERMAL CLAD insulated metal substrates, which are high-performing, thermally-enhanced substrates that help maximize system power density and reliability.  THERMAL CLAD is available in a variety of constructions, including THERMAL CLAD HPL, which is optimized for high-power lighting applications and used by many of the world’s top LED manufacturers for Power LEDs.
