Embedded Office and Lynx Software Technologies are to host an educational workshop entitled ‘Is your ‘safe’ design open to security vulnerabilities?’ at the Kempinski Hotel, Munich Airport on November 11.  As the world of industrial automation moves in the direction of “Industry 4.0”, the evaluation of data security is becoming increasingly important, not only in the context of the Internet of Things, but also in safety applications.

If a security breach interferes with the operation of an industrial plant, or a vehicle, the distinction between functional safety and security becomes meaningless. Safe operation cannot be guaranteed without strong security. The workshop explains how this could be realised at the Kempinski Hotel Airport Munich on Tuesday 11th November, on the opening day of the electronica conference.

Will Keegan, Technical Director Software Security at Lynx, is also participating in a panel discussion organised by Electronic Specifier on security at the electronica conference. Will Keegan’s contribution to the panel discussion will focus on the issue of protecting the vulnerable gateways in the M2M sub networks that are a key element in the Internet of Things.

Keegan points out that many IoT endpoints are connected to the Internet via a proprietary network with a gateway, particularly in a safety critical industrial setting. It is therefore vital to ensure the trustworthiness of the gateway between these networks rather than merely protecting the endpoints. The discussion will take place in Hall A3 between 10:00AM and 11:30AM on Wednesday November 12.
