Powersolve has backed one man’s attempt to power his way across the driest place on earth. 35 year old Neil Wilkie has trekked across the notorious Atacama Desert in northern Chile on the second stage of his four-year plan to cross some of the most demanding places on the planet. Last year’s first adventure saw Neil take on the Gobi Desert in a similar seven day test of his physical and mental endurance. During his crossing Neil (pictured during his Gobi crossing) had to cope with temperature extremes from 40ºC of heat to well below freezing at night.
“Although I think Neil was quite mad to put himself through the mental and physical demands of this adventure, he did it to raise money for the Marie Curie Cancer Fund, an organisation that has helped his family and many thousands of others.” Says Powersolve’s Managing Director Peter Clark. All of us at Powersolve are delighted to be helping Neil raise lots of money for this worthwhile charity” he adds.

Neil’s trek consisted of six stages totaling 250 kilometres (155 miles) across the Atacama Desert. He carried all the food and equipment needed for the seven days on his back. The organizers provided a regular supply of water and a space in a tent was provided each day.

To add to the discomfort, the entire crossing took place at least one mile above sea level, again with temperatures in the evenings dropping to below freezing but with the added problem of altitude.
