Over the next year, the telecoms industry is going to see a huge amount of innovation, driven by developments such as telco and hyperscaler convergence, the introduction of 5G standalone, the wider adoption of open RAN and new applications and services designed for the network edge.

According to Omdia's smartphone preliminary shipment report for the second quarter of 2022, global smartphone shipments totaled 293.7 million units, a decrease of 3.2% compared to the same period last year – and a 4.6% decrease compared to the previous quarter.

Cumulative shipments of foldable smartphones distributed worldwide by the end of 2021 recorded 11.5 million units for the first time since the first foldable smartphone was launched in 2019 according to Omdia‘s 4Q21 smartphone model market tracker. Due to the high price barrier, sales of early foldable smartphones were limited. 

The global smartphone market grew 6.9% year-over-year (YoY) to 299.1 million units in 2Q 2021, compared to the 279.7 million units shipped in 2Q 2020 – according to Omdia’s latest smartphone preliminary shipment result.

The global smartphone market was able to recover from a tremendously difficult first half of 2020. The 0.9% year-on-year decline in Q3 is a significant improvement over the over 1%5, and worse, declines in each of the first two quarters of the year, according to Omdia’s latest global smartphone shipment preliminary result.

Global research company OMDIA has today released the first version of its 5G Market Progress Assessment (end-2019) report, showing that South Korea is the leading country for 5G deployment in the twenty two leading 5G countries analysed for their deployment of 5G technology.
