It’s a bold claim, but 2019 should see cellular IoT finally become a large-scale commercial reality. It has been announced by Nordic Semiconductor, that OneMeter, an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) startup, has selected Nordic’s nRF51822 Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) System-on-Chip (SoC) to provide the wireless connectivity for its ‘OneMeter Beacon’, a device that provides companies with the ability to monitor and manage their energy usage data in ‘real time’.

Developed by Finnish startup, Anicare, the Anicare Healtag tracker is attached to an animal's earflap and can autonomously measure different vital functions for up to five years. Data is sent via cellular direct to the Cloud for immediate access via a smartphone app so that injured or ill animals in the wild can be automatically identified for rescue and treatment.

Through the high integration and pre-certification for global operation, it solves complex wireless design challenges and enables developers to make easy use of this cellular technology.

Ultra low power (ULP) RF specialist Nordic Semiconductor has announced that Samsung SDS, a Seoul-based subsidiary of multinational corporation Samsung, has used Nordic's award-winning nRF52832 Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) System-on-Chip (SoC) in its 'SHP-DP930 Smart Doorlock'.

  Nordic Semiconductor's latest multiprotocol SoC, the nRF52840, which supports both Bluetooth 5 (Bluetooth Low Energy) and IEEE 802.15.4 (the foundation of the Thread networking standard together with the OpenThread stack) is Thread 1.1 certified. The nRF52840 SoC passed all Thread certification tests while supporting Bluetooth 5 connectivity to a central device.
