Virtual platforms accelerate embedded software development

Altera has collaborated with Mentor Graphics to provide embedded software developers access to Vista virtual platforms that support its entire SoC FPGA portfolio, including the 3rd gen 14nm Stratix 10 SoCs with a 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor. The Mentor Graphics Vista SoC virtual platforms are pre-built, fully functional simulation models of the ARM processor subsystems featured in each of Altera’s 28nm, 20nm and 14nm SoC ...

Altera demos leading SoC solutions at embedded world

At embedded world 2015, Altera will demonstrate how its SoCs are enabling advanced embedded systems featured in automotive and industrial applications. Altera will be displaying its Arria 10 SoCs, the only 20nm SoC FPGA family, which provide embedded developers access to a high-performance applications-class ARM processor, integrated into a high-performance 20nm programmable fabric.

Audi chooses Altera SOC FPGAs for driver assistance

Altera has announced that its SoC FPGAs have been selected for use in Audi’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) targeted for mass production. Audi and Austrian high-tech company TTTech chose the Altera Cyclone V SoC FPGA for its ability to increase system performance and enable the differentiated features Audi requires for piloted driving and parking.

Software supports hardened floating point DSP blocks

Providing immediate support for the hardened floating point DSP blocks integrated in Arria 10 FPGAs and SoCs, Altera has released version 14.1 of its Quartus II software. Three unique DSP design entry flows enables users to achieve up to an industry-leading 1.5TFLOPS of DSP performance. The software also includes optimisations to improve designer productivity by accelerating Arria 10 FPGA and SoC design time.

FPGAs, IoT controllers & SoCs on display at SPS IPC Drives

Altera will demonstrate industrial solutions based on its FPGAs and SoCs at the SPS IPC Drives conference in Nuremberg, Germany, from 25th to 27th November, showing how industrial systems designers can use the devices to reduce cost and time-to-market for factory automation system designs. Altera’s stand (Hall 3, Stand 270) will feature a variety of solutions enabled by Altera Cyclone V and MAX 10 devices.

Accelerator platform connects FPGA to POWER8 CPU

Working together through the OpenPOWER Foundation, Altera and IBM have developed the industry’s first FPGA-based acceleration platform that coherently connects an FPGA to a POWER8 CPU leveraging IBM’s Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (CAPI). The platform was unveiled at the SuperComputing Exhibition and Conference in New Orleans (Nov 16-21).

Workflow accelerates algorithmic designs in SoCs

Programming support for ARM-based SoCs, in the form of Release 2014b from MathWorks, is being offered by Altera. An automated, highly integrated model-based design workflow optimised for the company's SoCs is provided by the Release 2014b. Reducing development time, designers using this flow can accelerate their algorithmic designs in SoCs while remaining in a high-level programming environment.

Lowering the TCO in industrial applications

Approximately one-third of embedded designers surveyed on the adoption and use of FPGAs for embedded applications responded that they perceived FPGAs as too expensive to use in their designs. However, a look at the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) at the system level reveals that Altera FPGAs offer competitive and flexible alternatives to discrete MCU/DSP/ASSP products.

Integrated PowerSoCs offer industry's smallest footprint

Fully compliant with the Automotive Electronics Council (AEC-Q100) qualification standard temperature grade 2, nine PowerSoC devices have been released by Altera. The Altera Enpirion PowerSoCs which comply with the critical stress test qualification for automotive ICs include step-down devices from the EP53xx and EN63xx families.

Multi-standard SDR platform takes centre stage at MILCOM

At the Military Communications Conference (MILCOM) 2014, Altera and Lime Microsystems demonstrated a multi-standard SDR platform. Based on Lime’s field-programmable RF (FP-RF) chip and Altera's FPGAs and Enpirion PowerSoCs, the platform enables engineers to design radio that can receive and transmit a range of different radio protocols (or waveforms), depending on the software used.

Altera and ARM Expand Strategic Partnership for SoC Development Tools

ARM TechCon—Altera Corporation and ARM today announced a long-term agreement to expand their strategic partnership for best-in-class embedded software development tools for SoC FPGAs. FPGAs enable the operation of a documentary-style camera

To enable the operation of it's documentary-style camera, ARRI have utilised Altera's Stratix V FPGA and Enpirion PowerSoC DC/DC converter. These products contribute to the AMIRA camera's ergonomic design which is optimised for single-operator use. With the Stratix V FPGA, the AMIRA camera features the same sensor and image quality as the ARRI ALEXA camera, but at up to 200fps.

Full Mil Temp compliance planned for FPGA & SoC family

Plans for a military temperature (Mil Temp) qualification for Altera's 20nm Arria 10 FPGAs and SoCs has been announced. The devices will be qualified for extreme temperature environments (-55C to 125C ambient), alongside the production of guidelines on speed grades, protocols, and external memory interfaces best suited to specific applications.
