STMicroelectronics launches MatterConnect service for secure device provisioning

STMicroelectronics has introduced ST MatterConnect, a service designed to simplify the secure provisioning of authentication credentials in Matter-compatible smart-home devices.

The turnkey service enables manufacturers to have essential security credentials loaded into ST25DA-C NFC tags and STSAFE-A120 secure elements before devices reach the market. These include the mandatory Matter Device Attestation Certificate (DAC), cryptographic keys, product and version information, and customer-specific data.

ST will generate and inject the credentials in-house, drawing on its security infrastructure and certified secure manufacturing facilities. The company says this approach can help equipment makers reduce operational costs, simplify production processes and accelerate product development by avoiding the need to establish their own secure provisioning infrastructure.

“Equipment makers can leverage ST’s status as an approved Product Attestation Authority (PAA) and Product Attestation Intermediate (PAI) to ensure trust and compliance without the expense of building secure provisioning infrastructure internally,” said Sylvain Fidelis, Multi-Market Business Line Manager at STMicroelectronics.

Both the ST25DA-C and STSAFE-A120 are designed to support authentication in Matter-enabled devices, with sensitive information such as security keys protected within secure hardware.

The ST25DA-C NFC tag supports Matter’s NFC commissioning process, allowing users to connect compatible smart-home products more easily across different ecosystems. Applications include smart lighting, plugs, smoke alarms, security cameras and presence sensors, helping to simplify setup without the need for multiple proprietary hubs.

The STSAFE-A120, meanwhile, connects to a device’s host processor via an I²C interface. In addition to Matter device authentication, it provides IoT security functions including secure connection establishment and integrity verification. The secure element operates on a Common Criteria EAL5+ certified platform.

ST MatterConnect is intended to help manufacturers bring Matter-compatible products to market with the necessary credentials already provisioned, reducing the complexity of managing device identity and security during production.
