Novel mini driver can be retrofitted onto stepper motors

An innovative miniature driver that can be retrofitted to a stepper motor’s rear flange has been introduced by Astrosyn International Technology. This elegant device frees up space usually taken by conventional drive systems – it also reduces cabling.

The three models in the range have maximum output currents ranging from 2A to as high as 8A, at voltages of 35V or 40V. All measure just 42.3mm long x 42.3mm wide x 13.5mm high.

The drivers are incredibly compact, particularly considering they can output as much as 8A, said David Melder, Astrosyn’s technical sales director. Another surprise is that there is no price premium over conventional models.

Designed to be bolted to the rear of NEMA size 17 stepper motors, the self-contained bipolar drivers have a rugged die-cast aluminium construction that provides efficient heat dissipation.

Microstepping modes are available from full stepping down to 1/16 step, and there is automatic current reduction at standstill.
