Axial vs centrifugal fans – comparing the technologies

CUI Devices’ Ryan Smoot compares an axial fan design with centrifugal fan design.

One of the most common and popular ways of removing excess heat from a system is via forced air cooling from a fan. This ultimately presents an engineer with the choice between either an axial fan design or a centrifugal fan design. Both designs are well-recognised and used in a variety of applications but deciding on which type will depend on a variety of factors and your specific system requirements.

Axial fans operate by expelling air parallel to the intake and are best suited for high-volume, low-pressure output applications. On the other hand, centrifugal fans expel air 90° from the intake and provide low volume, high pressure output, which makes them ideal for moving air through a concentrated area like ductwork or where exhaust/ventilation is needed

This CUI Insights blog post, “Axial Fans vs. Centrifugal Fans – What’s the Difference?” covers this topic in greater detail, providing a basic understanding of axial and centrifugal fans, while comparing the main use cases for each design.
