Vishay Intertechnology has announced upgrades to its TSOP18xx, TSOP58xx, and TSSP5xx series infrared (IR) receiver modules, catering to remote control, proximity sensing, and light barrier uses.

The enhanced modules, housed in Minicast packages, offer direct replacements for existing series devices. Key improvements include a 50% reduction in current consumption, heightened Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) resilience up to 12 kV, an expanded voltage range from 2.0 V to 5.5 V, a 20% increase in dark-ambient sensitivity, and bolstered performance under intense DC lighting.

Each device in the TSOP18xx, TSOP58xx, and TSSP5xx series from Vishay Semiconductors integrates a photodetector, preamplifier, and IR filter. These upgrades extend battery life in portable devices due to decreased current use across a broader voltage spectrum. Additionally, their enhanced robustness in bright sunlight facilitates outdoor applications. Employing Vishay's latest internal IC technology, the upgrades ensure prolonged product availability and shorter lead times for customers. These modules also eliminate the need for PCB redesigns, being direct replacements for current models, thereby reducing costs.

The TSOP18xx and TSOP58xx series are tailored for IR remote controls in TVs, soundbars, gaming consoles, set-top boxes, home appliances, and air conditioning units. These devices offer increased resilience against disturbances like IR emissions from various lamps and are unaffected by supply voltage fluctuations and ripple noise. They are available with carrier frequencies ranging from 30 kHz to 56 kHz, and in six automatic gain control (AGC) versions to accommodate different burst code lengths.

The TSSP5xx series, featuring fixed-gain IR receiver modules, provides long-range proximity and presence sensing up to 2 meters. When combined with the TSAL6200 emitter, they are suitable for light barrier applications up to 8 meters (TSSP580xx). With a sensitivity peak at 940 nm and a carrier frequency of 38 kHz, these devices are optimal for distance sensing in toys, drones, robots; object approach detection for activating displays and user interfaces; and garage door light barriers. They also serve as reflective sensors in hand dryers, dispensers, water faucets, toilets, vending machines, and security or pet gates.

Samples and production quantities of the upgraded IR receiver modules are now available, with a four-week lead time.
