Sensors are almost everywhere – in automobiles, household appliances, industrial plants - Hall sensors in particular are often used. They offer contactless solutions, show no wear and have a very long service life.

The Düsseldorf-based company, Luksens Technologie GmbH, manufactures current sensors, pressure sensors and air quality sensors for a wide range of industries. LUKSENS relies on the MLX90290 linear Hall sensor from Melexis for higher accuracy and production reliability.

The sensor solutions manufactured by LUKSENS cover a wide range of applications. The solutions are used, for example, in the areas of smart home, energy management, drive control and industrial automation. For example, they increase the efficiency of industrial plants, which saves time, energy and money. In addition, the sensors enable accurate energy management as well as economical and competent motor control for industrial and energy generation plants. LUKSENS sensors can also be found in everyday areas: In vehicles such as cars, buses, trucks and off-road vehicles. Multi-purpose sensors regulate the number of revolutions, measure fuel consumption and monitor the speed of the crankshaft. Built into household appliances, LUKSENS sensors enable energy consumption to be minimised and offer many possibilities for individual customisation.

New sensor solution sought for higher accuracy

Customers use current sensors manufactured by LUKSENS to measure and control engine drive current in real time in harsh industrial environments. For smooth motor operation and accurate speed control, the current sensor must not be influenced by the working environment.

“With our new solution we improved the accuracy of the sensors affected by temperature under high pressure and low temperature conditions,” says David Wang at LUKSENS. “This also resulted in a significantly decrease of the error rate during production. What was needed was a sensor that could provide more stable performance over a wide temperature range, as well as a lower error rate.”

Hall sensor for more stable performance and higher accuracy

During an online search for appropriate manufacturers and products, LUKSENS quickly came across DACOM West. The value-added distributor (VAD) and solution partner from Haan, Germany, supports the implementation of high-quality electronic components and specialises, among other things, in the field of sensor technology. LUKSENS contacted DACOM West and promptly received an initial list of possible technical solutions. In addition, the technical support team provided test samples within a short time.

"The test samples helped us to quickly select the most suitable product for us. We chose the MLX90290 linear Hall sensor from Melexis because of its superior performance compared to products from competitors such as Allegro," says Mr Wang at LUKSENS.

With a total project duration of just under 24 months, the solution was in place at LUKSENS' factory. Individual configurations with the manufacturer were not necessary. "DACOM's appropriate and efficient advice continued throughout the installation," says Wang. "During the implementation process, there were some issues with the consistency of the product's magnetic sensitivity. DACOM's technical team was remarkable in handling this issue."

Conclusion

LUKSENS decided to upgrade to Hall sensors from Melexis because the previous sensor solution decreased the accuracy of the products in a wide temperature range and increased the error rate. In total, the installation affects around 400,000 objects per year. An annual growth of about 10% has already been considered for future requirements. By using the device, the effect of product temperature performance has improved by almost 30%. For LUKSENS, the most important features and functions of the product in everyday work are linearity and stability, as well as the influence of temperature drift.

"The MLX90290 linear Hall sensor is a very effective solution and significantly reduces the effect of ambient temperature on product performance," says Mr Wang. "Potential upgrades are planned for the future, for which we would again rely on both the manufacturer Melexis and DACOM West as distributors. We are also very satisfied with the support, the technical teams from both the manufacturer and the distributor have given us a lot of suggestions and assistance overall. In particular, the technical staff are extremely helpful in rectifying any minor problems that may arise."
