Gas sensor connects to your phone
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed a miniature gas sensor that can be connected to mobile devices. Gas measurements made with smartphones will make activities such as the detection of internal air problems easier. In addition, sleep quality will be measurable with greater precision, using mobile healthcare applications which gauge carbon dioxide quantities.
Dual function position sensor
Offering a non-contacting position sensing technology in an innovative design that provides both linear and rotary position feedback in a single package, the Blade25 inductive position sensor has been introduced by Gill Sensors & Controls. The company’s proprietary inductive sensing technology can monitor the activator's (target) position in either a straight linear movement or in a curved 'arc' rotary movement as it passes over the sen...
Wearables sensor measures pulse & oxygen saturation
Providing excellent signal quality and low energy consumption, the SFH 7060 sensor from Osram Opto Semiconductors is designed to measure pulse rates and the oxygen saturation level of blood. It is designed for wearables such as smart watches and fitness armbands for continuously monitoring fitness levels. This integrated optical sensor contains five light emitting diodes with three different wavelengths and one high-sensitivity photodiode.
Real-time data for cancer therapy
In the battle against cancer, which kills nearly 8 million people worldwide each year, doctors have in their arsenal many powerful weapons, including various forms of chemotherapy and radiation. What they lack, however, is good reconnaissance, a reliable way to obtain real-time data about how well a particular therapy is working for any given patient.
Sensor improves the accuracy of prostate cancer diagnosis
New research has shown how a smart sensor chip, able to pick up on subtle differences in glycoprotein molecules, can improve the accuracy and efficiency of prostate cancer diagnosis. Researchers at the University of Birmingham believe that the technology will help improve the process of early stage diagnosis.
MEMS stylus force sensor is 'industry's smallest'
ALPS has developed the ‘HSFPAR Series’ Force Sensor, suitable for force sensing in input devices and posture control in industrial equipment and robots, using MEMS technology to achieve the industry’s smallest size. Mass production is already underway. Demand for high-precision pen-shaped input devices (stylus pens) has been growing recently with the rising popularity of digital drawing and painting.
SMT angular MEMS accelerometer measures just 5.2x2.5x0.8mm
Murata announces the successful development of what it believes to be the world’s first surface mount MEMS angular acceleration sensor. Recent years have seen a growing customer demand for angular acceleration sensors with compact dimensions, which also feature high sensitivity, low noise and wide frequency band.
Safety manual & FMEDA document help streamline MCUs for ASIL-B
STMicroelectronics has published a safety manual and FMEDA document that help streamline ISO 26262 functional-safety certification up to ASIL-B for systems containing its STM8AF automotive MCUs. With valuable features including CAN and LIN drivers, touch-sense/LCD-control capability, ST’s AEC-Q100 qualified STM8AF series is an economical choice for body and infotainment applications such as seat adjusters, instrumentation and lighting ...
Smart inductor sensor IC offers excellent noise immunity
Microsemi has announced the availability of the first device in its latest family of sensor interface ICs based upon inductive sensing technology. The LX3301A, the first inductive sensor IC in the market utilising Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) architecture implementations on PCBs, is designed for applications within the automotive and industrial markets.
Low-power VOC sensor accurately assesses ambient air
ams AG has announced that Elgato is using the ams AS-MLV-P2 MEMS VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) gas sensor in its Eve family of home monitoring devices. The 9.1x9.1x4.5mm AS-MLV-P2 is a low-power gas sensor which accurately measures levels of VOCs in the air, producing a precisely varying resistance in response to changes in ambient levels of pollutants commonly found in indoor environments.
