Buck-boost regulator designed to power automotive sensors
The release of a new wide input 5V output regulator has been announced by Allegro MicroSystems Europe, which is designed to power automotive sensors and low power uControllers. It can also be used for non-automotive applications where the input voltage could be above or below 5V.
Controllers smooth path to capacitive touch designs
The CPT212B and CPT213B TouchXpress capacitive touch controllers from Silicon Labs is in stock at Mouser Electronics. The controllers eliminate time-consuming firmware development, providing a simple turnkey solution for adding touch-based designs to a wide range of products, including home appliances, medical equipment, consumer electronics, instrument and control panels, and lighting control.
Barometric sensors for battery operated mobile devices
Two MEMS-based barometric pressure sensors from Omron Electronic Components Europe have been specifically designed to support height and pressure measurement in drones, smartphones, pedometers and other battery powered mobile systems. The Omron 2SMPB-02B and 2SMPB-02E sensors provide stable and reliable height and pressure measurements, allowing changes in elevation to be reliably recorded.
Sensor communication devices deliver data demand
The range of IO-Link compatible hardware and ancillaries at RS Components (RS) has been expanded, an initiative which has quadrupled its stock of the devices over the past six months. IO-Link, the first standardised IO technology (to IEC 61131-9) for communication with sensors and actuators, will play an important part in the growing creation and adoption of fully connected solutions based around Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things...
Bought a new car recently? It could have a security flaw!
Researchers have discovered a security flaw that could potentially (and probably does) affect all new vehicles. It allows an attacker to turn off safety features, such as airbags, ABS brakes, and power-steering - or any of a vehicle's computerised components connected to its controller area network or CAN bus.
Capacitive technology in wearable devices
With more and more applications requiring high accuracy atmospheric pressure data, engineers are seeking ever more sensitive pressure sensing methods. New sensor technologies that are based on capacitive sensing enable engineers to create miniaturised and very accurate devices while satisfying demanding energy constraints and addressing reliability challenges. Current sensor IC with dual fault user settable
Allegro MicroSystems Europe has introduced a new high accuracy Hall-effect-based current sensor IC with multiple programmable fault levels intended for industrial and consumer applications with a focus on motor control and power inverter stage applications. One of the key benefits of Allegro’s ACS720 is to provide high isolation with a reduced bill of materials made possible by the proprietary IC SOIC-16W package.
Radar sensor helps enhance vehicle safety systems
DENSO has announced that it has developed a 24GHz submillimetre-wave rear and side radar sensor to help enhance vehicle safety systems. The sensor is used in the 2018 Toyota Camry released this past July.
Sensors and AI: the dream team
You don’t have to attach sensors to everything. With machine learning, a new suite of only nine different sensors can recognise dozens of various phenomena. Ubiquitous sensors seem almost synonymous with the Internet of Things (IoT), but some Carnegie Mellon University researchers say ubiquitous sensing - with a single, general purpose sensor for each room - may be better.
