Each waterproof LVD unit, rated IP65 and IK05, will be powered by a pack of 10 VHT cells providing a nominal voltage of 12 V and a capacity of 1.1 Ah. Current projections indicate that Saft will deliver over 20,000 battery packs per year over the 10‐years product life.
IED Green Power selected Saft’s VHT batteries for their reliability and their ability to deliver exceptional performance over a wide temperature range of ‐40 °C to +100 °C. This makes them ideal for wind turbines, where operating temperatures can drop to ‐30 °C and climb to +50 °C. In addition, they offer very high energy, excellent charge efficiency, and zero maintenance over a 10‐year service life, meeting the key LVD design criteria of 50,000 hours of maintenance‐free operation.
Stephane Senyarich, Saft’s development engineer for lighting applications said: “It’s the ability of Saft’s Ni‐MH cells to operate in extreme conditions which have enabled IED Green Power to develop this new emergency lighting solution for the wind turbine sector. Wind energy is a fast‐growing market and we hope to help ensure the security and reliability of its emergency lighting requirements for many years to come.”
