Saft OSP EXPO paper highlights powerful case for nickel-based batteries in outside plant applications

Saft, the world leader in the design and manufacture of hightechnology industrial batteries, is presenting a conference paper at this year’s OSP EXPO that describes its long-term practical experience in the installation and operation of nickelbased batteries in OSP (outside plant) applications.

The paper, ”Nickel-based batteries deliver reliable energy storage even after 10 years – an analysis of field data from telecom OSP installations” will be given by Antoine Brenier, Saft’s director of sales, telecom, at 7:30 am on October 13. The paper provides a detailed evaluation of field data gathered by independent testing companies from nickel-based batteries operating for over 10 years in real-life installations across various geographic temperature zones – including applications where the batteries have been subject to worstcase operating conditions. As part of the study, the majority of the longest-serving battery strings were tested in the field, in their as-found condition. The results of the evaluation demonstrate that nickel-based batteries will continue to deliver reliable performance and high levels of safety even after more than 10 years of operation in OSP applications, while requiring only infrequent maintenance. In particular, the survey also proves that Saft’s Telecom Ni-Cd batteries have met, or even exceeded, their stated performance when they were launched.

Batteries play a vital role across a wide variety of telecom applications, including remote terminals, where they provide standby energy storage and emergency power. However, the uncontrolled environment usually encountered in outside plant (OSP) cabinets, especially the elevated temperatures, presents a major challenge for telecom batteries in terms of performance, service life and safety. As this paper concludes, nickel-based batteries represent a viable, cost-effective alternative to traditional lead-acid batteries by offering significant advantages in terms of greater reliability, predictable performance over a longer life and optimized TCO (total cost of ownership). Saft has built on its long-term experience in the field deployment of nickel-based batteries to develop a portfolio of specialized telecom solutions. Visitors to Booth 727 will see how Saft can offer the ideal battery to meet the specific needs of OEMs and operators in the OSP industry. A key element in this portfolio is the high-energy, maintenance-free Tel.X range designed to deliver long-life and exceptional performance in demanding telecom network installations, such as those found in North America.
