PowerPax UK has announced the launch of the P78 range of high efficiency switching regulators which are designed to be pin compatible with 78xx series linear regulators. This series is designed to fit into the industry standard TO-220 footprint and provide a high efficiency alternative to standard linear regulators.

The P78 series features regulators with outputs of 0.5A and 1A with efficiencies of up to 96%. They feature inputs in the range of 4.5 – 32V DC and have low no load current making these products suitable for many applications including those with battery power sources. All products have low output ripple and noise and have comprehensive in-built protection including continuous short circuit and over temperature protection. Output voltages range from 3.3V to 15V with Line regulation of ±0.4% max and load regulation of ±0.6% max. In addition to the standard positive output voltages it is also possible to configure these devices to provide negative output voltages.

These regulators are available in two package style with standard TO-220 3-PIN and SMD variants. Both case styles are provided in a plastic package which is UL94-V0 rated and RoHS compliant. The SMD versions of these products provide extended features with output voltage adjustment and remote on/off in addition to the standard features of the 3-Pin SIL versions.

The high efficiency design of this series (8.5W/CM3) means that internal losses are kept to a minimum and as a result no heat sink is required. This makes application easier as the designer does not need to be concerned with the thermal issues often associated with the use of linear regulators. The operating temperature range of this range is -40°C to +85°C with free air convection cooling. These PowerPax high efficiency regulators have a typical MTBF greater than 2 million hours calculated using MIL-HDBK-217F.
