Z-Wave-Alliance member NorthQ, a manufacturer of monitoring and security solutions, has developed a new smart reader based on Z-Wave. It has been designed to visualise power consumption in private households in a way that is transparent to the consumer. The NQ Power Reader can easily be installed on top of existing electronic or mechanical meters. The software widget for energy visualization has been especially developed for a Danish utility provider. Using the Z-Wave wireless standard, homeowners or tenants can easily integrate the solution into their own home control networks and link it to other Z-Wave devices. NorthQ and Z-Wave presented the solution also at Metering & Billing/CRM Europe in Amsterdam.
The NQ Power Reader 92021 package consists of three parts: a meter reader, a battery-powered transmitter and a USB receiver. These three units combine to transfer the relevant consumption data to a computer and provide updates every 15 minutes. The NQ Power Reader displays the information on the computer using clear graphics. The software widget developed for a Danish utility provider allows consumers to have a continuous overview of their current and historical power consumption (shown in kilowatt hours). In addition, the solution monitors the CO2 emissions occurring in the household. Furthermore, the solution is also capable of real-time measurements, which provide information about how much power each individual device is consuming, even in standby-mode.

Plan and compare energy costs
The Power Reader is also able to convert power consumption into associated electricity costs (in euros). Users can also enter an annual budget into the device. The reader constantly compares this to the current needs and shows, according to the present status, whether consumption will be above or within the indicated budget at the end of the year. This information also makes it possible in the medium term for the current household power consumption to be compared with the value from previous years. Because the NQ Power Reader stores all data, it is also possible to compare data between two flats or houses after moving home.

We are excited to see the innovative Z-Wave products from partners such as NorthQ“, said Raoul Wijgergangs, chairman of the Z-Wave Alliance. „Simple, easy to install solutions like the NQ Power Reader keeps Z-Wave on the forefront of helping consumers save energy.”

Green energy management via Z-Wave
Z-Wave is the leading 2-way wireless communication protocol for home control applications, with more than 380 interoperable home control and energy-saving devices worldwide use the Z-Wave technology. The Z-Wave Advanced Energy Control (AEC) Framework enables smart meters to be integrated into home control solutions and in this way creates the basis for universally smart energy solutions involving energy providers, smart meter manufacturers and end customers. This makes it possible to create an intelligent, advanced and environmentally-friendly energy management system. Thanks to Z-Wave, household energy consumption not only becomes transparent. House and flat owners also can actively control and adjust their entire network of interoperable Z-Wave devices as required to gain new levels of energy conservation and utility bill savings.
