MOSFET gate driver enhances DC motor efficiency

A fully-integrated 3-phase MOSFET gate driver helps to simplify designs and maximise the battery life of an application.

Providing a complete solution, TRINAMIC’s TMC6140-LA BLDC gate driver integrates bottom shunt amplifiers for 30% improved power efficiency while reducing the component count by 50% compared to similar solutions.

It is in stock at distributor Digi-Key.

Developed for servo motors, brushless motors, and PMSM motors, the chip’s design works over a wide voltage range.

Charge pumps statically stabilise the gate voltages of external MOSFETs up to 100 A coil current, for both the low-side drivers and gate drivers.

For applications at 15 V or lower the switching regulator output can be used to stabilize the power supply.

The TMC6140 maintains the output signals to ensure consistent operation and extended battery life.

Integrated shunt amplifiers provide current sensing for status information, while an analogue programmable short detection and diagnostic output reports status back to the host.

The device is supported by free software and tools.

It features a voltage range of 5 VDC to 30 VDC and gate drive of 0.5 A or 1.0 A.

There are two low-power modes with 0.25 mA standby current consumption. Diagnostics output is via UART-TxD

Applications cover industrial drives, power tools, robotics, textile machines, factory automation, laboratory automation, pumps, fans, battery-operated devices and hand-held devices.
