Vishay Releases Industry’s First Solid Tantalum Chip Capacitors With 75-V Rating

Extending its leadership position in high-voltage solid tantalum chip capacitors, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. today announced that the company’s TANTAMOUNT Hi-Rel COTS T97 and commercial, industrial-grade 597D series have been enhanced with an industry-high 75-V rating.

For decades, 50 V had represented the limit for rated voltage capability in solid tantalum chip capacitors. In 2008, Vishay broke through this performance barrier with the introduction of 63-V ratings, and the company now builds upon this patented technology with the introduction of the industry’s first 75-V solid tantalum chip capacitors.

With a 75-V rating and capacitance of 10 µF in the R case size, the T97 and 597D series provide high reliability in circuits with applied voltages between 25 V and 40 V, a performance level that has previously been available only with through-hole technology.

The conformal-coated capacitors with wrap-around terminations feature a dual anode construction to ensure the lowest ESR in their class. The 597D capacitors are optimized for industrial automation and control systems, and the T97 devices are designed for safety-critical applications, such as those found in the military and aerospace industries, including dc-to-dc converters and power distribution in weapons and radar systems, avionics, and space-based electronics. The T97 series offers designers a wide array of ratings not found in available MIL specifications, combining the flexibility and convenience of a commercial product with the reliability needed in demanding applications.

The T97 series offers high-reliability screening options including Weibull grading and surge current testing options in accordance with MIL-PRF-55365. This differentiates these devices from commercial- grade capacitors by featuring the required reliability and surge screening options necessary to ensure performance in Hi-Rel applications while still maintaining a maximum capacitance-voltage product, a figure of merit that measures the amount of energy a capacitor can store, and helps designers choose the best capacitor for their applications.

Part of Vishay’s TANTAMOUNT tantalum capacitor family, the T97 and 597D series feature a capacitance range of 10 μF to 1500 μF and a voltage range from 4 V to 75 V in nine case sizes, including the V case with a low 2-mm profile. The devices offer ultra-low ESR values down to 0.015 Ω at + 25 °C and 100 kHz, and high ripple currents to 4.1 A. The capacitors operate over a temperature range of – 55 °C to + 85 °C, to + 125 °C with voltage derating.
