Applications include: a) gas sensing, where an IR source, often modulated at 4Hz, is required to illuminate and be transmitted through the gas, and the absorption measured to determine the gas concentration; b) controlled heating, where an IRE is used to control the local temperature of a sample cuvette used in liquid nitrogen experiments, and c) general camera illumination, typically used in covert surveillance, or machine vision when a line laser would be used.
