Compact and powerful TopLEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors featuring integrated lenses in black packages are now available not only in red and yellow but also in blue, green and orange. Osram added the three new colors to its TopLED Black Series 60° beam angle portfolio. Also new is a 30° beam angle version available with all 5 colors. “This means that we have the broadest portfolio of ‘black’ LEDs on the market enabling a wide range of applications,” said Sven Weber, Product Manager.
Ideal for a wide range of VMS applications

The LEDs are particularly suitable for monochromatic and multicolor displays used in variable message signs (VMS), such as electronic traffic management road signs, travel information displays in airports, railway and bus stations, parking control systems, and gas price signs, etc. The most suitable beam angle for each of these applications depends on the distance a sign is from the viewer and local conditions. On straight roads, the LEDs with a 30° beam angle are ideal, whereas a 60° beam angle is better for the curved entries and exits of highways and gas stations and for applications like bus destination displays. The orange LED versions are intended for use in pedestrian signs in the U.S. and Japan.

The completely black package of the TopLED Black Series reduces reflections considerably. The LEDs also offer such high contrast that displays have excellent legibility in all lighting conditions. The 30° version of the green LED offers 7 cd luminance at an operating current of 20 mA – the highest on the market.

All TopLEDs are SMT components suitable for automated handling so that displays can be manufactured at lower cost than those with radial LEDs. The solder pads are compatible with other TopLED and Power TopLED family LEDs, providing flexibility. Design change can be accomplished easily. This means that displays can be made with different luminances and beam angles on a single circuit board.
