NEC Electronics Europe has announced the support of the open source and royalty free real-time operating system, FreeRTOS for its 16-bit 78K0R and 32-bit V850 microcontrollers. FreeRTOS is simple to use, with minimal ROM and RAM overhead and is free to use in commercial applications. The modified GPL license under which it is distributed, allows users to deploy in applications without any requirement to share their source code.
NEC Electronics microcontrollers are supported by a number of commercial RTOS’s. By announcing the support for FreeRTOS , developers using NEC Electronics microcontrollers have the flexibility to develop with an RTOS of their choice regardless of budget.

Embedded systems increasingly require the use of an RTOS system to efficiently synchronise and schedule the various tasks they have to perform. Not all developers wish to pay the expense of a commercial RTOS. FreeRTOS is an independent, open-source operating system designed specifically for embedded microcontroller systems and has the performance, features and quality of a commercial product. The FreeRTOS organization has been established for over 5 years with more than 7000 downloads per month. Commercial licensing and support for FreeRTOS is also available through OpenRTOSTM from WITTENSTEIN at http://www.openrtos.com .

NEC Electronics provides a range of over 400 All Flash microcontrollers from the smallest 8-bit 78K0, to the high performance low power 16-bit 78K0R to the world’s leading* 32-bit V850. All designed to provide developers the flexibility, performance, memory size and peripheral integration to handle the simplest to the most demanding of embedded applications.
