Infineon releases combo IC for US-PD

Targetting USB power delivery (USB-PD) adapters for fast charging and power supply to battery-powered devices using the unified type-C connector, the IC integrates an AC/DC power factor correction (PFC) controller with a DC/DC hybrid flyback controller / asymmetrical half-bridge in a single package. The harmonised two stages meet the regulatory requirements of USB-PD rev 3.1, the Extended Power Range (EPR) specification for wide output voltage range with high PD. The integration of gate drivers and a 600V high voltage start-up cell for the initial IC voltage supply, together with the certified active X-capacitor discharge, reduce the bill of materials and component count.

The IC is based on a zero-voltage switching (ZVS) hybrid flyback controller topology, which, delivered in conjunction with GaN-based devices delivers efficiency across various line/load conditions. Zero voltage switching coupled with resonant energy transfer to reduce the transformer, contribute to the high power density performance, says Infineon. The hybrid flyback has ZVS pulse insertion, including body diode cross-conduction presention in discontinuous conduction mode to ensure ZVS operation under all conditions.

The synchronous PFC and hybrid flyback burst mode operation also contribute to the lowest possible no-load input standby power performance, says the company. The quasi-resonant multi-mode PFC stage features automatic PFC enable/disable functionality and adaptive PFC bus voltage control to maximise average and light load efficiency. Optionally, the integrated PFC function can be disabled, for use with an external PFC controller if required.

The hybrid flyback stage uses peak current control operation for regulation and fast dynamic load response.  Parameters of the XDPS2221 can be configures via a GUI (graphical user interface) in order to optimise system performance.
