Densitron Introduces Mechanically Compatible OLED Replacements for VFDs

Densitron’s new Character OLED modules provide a cost-saving and mechanically compatible solution to Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) users who are looking for a replacement/upgrade option that offers greater value. Compared to VFDs, OLED displays have faster response time and wider viewing angle (near 170°), as well as higher contrast (10000:1), brightness (100 cd/m2) and colour saturation without the need for colour filters. OLED modules offer up to 50K hours half-life time and consume 50% less power than VFDs. The space between each OLED pixel is 5 times less than that of a VFD, enabling a smoother graphic display.

In terms of module size, a VFD requires backlight, PCB, electronics and mechanical parts to be mounted around its frame. It also needs thick and strong sealing glasses to ensure vacuum encapsulation. All these contribute to the bulky construction and high production cost of a VFD. In contrast, the maximum thickness of an OLED display is just 1.3 mm as it is only made up of a single emissive layer which is sandwiched by two thin glasses. Since an OLED display requires fewer components to drive, customers’ BOM are significantly reduced.

Densitron’s 2×16 (DD-2C16WE-1A, DD-2C16YW-1A) and 2×20 (DD-2C20WE-1A, DD-2C20YW-1A) Character OLEDs are mechanically compatible with VFDs and are available in yellow and white. Red, blue and green colours can be customized. The displays come with in-built font CGROM, user-friendly connector boards that enable easy system integration and Chip-On-Glass configuration. The modules can be configured for 8 or 4 bit parallel/SPI/I2C interface.

USB Evaluation Kits are now available for the Character OLEDs. The displays can be further enhanced through Densitron’s Engineering Design Service which offers options on integrating standard or custom display modules with touch screens, PCBs, Plastics, and/or Keypads.
