VME/VXS board with Intel Core 2 Duo processor and Dual DVI-I graphics

Concurrent Technologies announces a new addition to its VME/VXS critical embedded product based on Intel’s latest dual-core processors. The VX 541/06x is a single slot 6U dual PMC/XMC VME/VXS processor board featuring the latest low power high performance dual core processor from the Intel embedded roadmap – the Intel® Core™2 Duo processor operating at 2.26 GHz or 1.86 GHz.

The board supports up to 8 Gbytes soldered DDR3-1066 SDRAM. A key differentiating feature of this board is that it supports dual DVI-I graphics via the front panel and dual DVI-D graphics via the rear panel. The VXS switched serial standard – VITA 41.3 – is optionally supported to provide fast data transfer between other compatible boards in the system. Commercial and extended temperature versions are available now and a ruggedized air-cooled (to VITA 47) version will be available shortly. This combination of high performance data processing and a wealth of I/O ensure the boards are ideal for intensive low power computing applications within the defense, security, telemetry, industrial control, scientific, and aerospace markets.

The VX 541/06x board supports the 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SP9300 or the 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SL9400 processor; the processor is soldered for improved reliability. The processor utilizes Intel’s 45nm process technology, and offers a large last-level on-die cache (6 Mbytes), 1066 MHz Front Side Bus, Intel® Virtualization, Intel® 64 Technology, improved power management, plus new features and enhancements to the Intel® Core™ microarchitecture delivering increased instructions per clock. The Intel Thermal Design Power (TDP) for the 45nm 2.26 GHz dual core processor is 25W giving a much improved performance per Watt when compared to earlier generations of processors. The Intel® GS45 Graphics Memory Controller Hub and Intel® ICH9M-E IO Controller Hub are used to complement the processor to achieve a low power, yet high performance core design. The board is suited for CPU intensive processing applications whereby the processor’s dual cores can access up to 8 Gbytes of soldered dual channel DDR3-1066 SDRAM, with a peak bandwidth of up to 16 Gbytes/s.

To enable easy fast transfer of data between the VX 541/06x board and other components in the system there are two networking options available: dual 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet interfaces via P2 or alternatively a VITA 41.3 interface via P0 giving dual 1000Mbps baseband IEEE 802.3 serial links onto a VXS backplane fabric.

For I/O, control and data processing flexibility the VX 541/06x supports a PMC/XMC site, with front and rear I/O, supporting up to 100MHz PCI-X operation as well as a x4 PCI Express™ XMC interface. A wide range of onboard I/O is available to the user: the board supports two 10/100/1000Mps Ethernet interfaces via the front panel as well as dual USB 2.0 and dual DVI-I graphics interfaces. The rear panel supports dual DVI-D, keyboard, mouse, three USB 2.0, one RS-232 and one RS-232/422/485 port, and two SATA300 interfaces. Other features provided are a PC real-time clock, watchdog timer and long duration timer, LAN boot firmware, an on-board CompactFlash® site and options for onboard 2.5-inch or 1.8-inch SATA300 mass storage devices. Optional rear transition modules are also available.

For ease of integration the VX 541/06x supports many of today’s leading operating systems, including Linux®, Windows® XP, Windows® XP Embedded, LynxOS®, Solaris™, QNX® and VxWorks®.
