A British robotics expert has attracted millions of views on YouTube after unveiling a battery-powered bicycle that replaces traditional wheels with large self-balancing spheres.

James Bruton, a former IT professional and toy designer, crafted the innovative bike in a secret location in Hampshire. Now a full-time Internet creator, Bruton documented the entire build process online, offering viewers a detailed look at the engineering challenges behind the project.

The bike’s unique design features large spherical wheels, similar to those used by circus acrobats. These allow the vehicle to move omnidirectionally, a striking departure from conventional cycling.

Bruton relied heavily on 3D printing technology, using 11 printers in his spare room to fabricate many of the bike’s bespoke components. While his prototype demonstrated successful operation at lower speeds, testing showed that the spherical wheels detached as velocity increased, highlighting the difficulties involved in achieving stable high-speed travel with this unusual mechanism.

Despite the mechanical limitations, Bruton's creation sparked significant interest online, with audiences drawn to the bold reimagining of bicycle design.
