Green Hills Software has announced a major enhancement to its Platform for Secure Networking, adding secure virtualization and new reference platforms. Green Hills Software’s approach to system virtualization enables a complete Linux operating system and its applications ecosystem to securely and seamlessly coexist with the performance, reliability-critical, and real-time portions of networking devices – all on a single general purpose microprocessor.
System availability is increased by eliminating the possibility for a non-critical application failure or corruption in the Linux environment to compromise the critical real-time packet traffic applications and services running on the INTEGRITY RTOS.

High availability and secure isolation between networking subsystems is assured by INTEGRITY, the world’s first Common Criteria EAL6+ certified operating system technology. The INTEGRITY advanced security architecture prevents denial-of-service attacks while guaranteeing optimal real-time performance for packet processing applications.

At the Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley 2009, Green Hills Software will demonstrate the application of its Platform for Secure Networking to a new reference design – the Fulcrum Microsystems “Vegas,” 48-port 1-Gigabit Ethernet switch chip reference system. The Vegas reference platform consists of the Green Hills Platform for Secure Networking, including GateD® – the industry’s benchmark solution for commercial-grade routing and switching software. Using Green Hills Software’s secure virtualization architecture, a standard Linux operating system will execute on the Freescale MPC8548 general purpose processor of the reference platform, providing system management functionality and other services. Green Hills Software’s INTEGRITY RTOS provides the secure isolation of the Linux environment from the real-time routing and packet processing functions, which execute as native INTEGRITY applications on the same general purpose processor. In addition, the INTEGRITY RTOS’s ultra-fast interprocess communications (IPC) enable the Linux and INTEGRITY applications to rapidly exchange management information.

“We are pleased to expand our partnership with Green Hills Software and its industry-leading software offering for the telecom space,” said Mike Zeile, president and chief operating officer of Fulcrum Microsystems. “Network service providers now have an ideal combination for their high performance systems: innovative Ethernet and switching silicon with complete networking software solutions based on the leading high performance, high reliability real-time operating system – INTEGRITY.”

“Green Hills Software provides the networking and telecommunication industry’s only one-stop solution for high reliability operating systems, secure virtualization, IPv4/IPv6 routing stack protocols, and field-proven control and data plane functionality,” commented Sue Hares, director of networking solutions, Green Hills Software. “The increased adoption of the Platform for Secure Networking by leading networking equipment manufacturers is a result of the excellent return on investment and increases in system availability provided by superior platform software technology, best-in-class developer productivity tools, and outstanding technical support.”
