Co-op campaign to deliver V2X chipset for 2017

STMicroelectronics and Autotalks have announced that they will co-operate to deliver a mass market-optimised V2X chipset, for widespread deployment by 2017. V2X communications, comprised of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), are becoming more commonplace, and the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) on V2X.

Worldwide V2V communication sales will amount to nearly 700,000 units in 2017, rising to 5.6m units in 2020 and as many as 55m in 2025, forecasts IHS. The vast majority of these sales, including both original equipment and aftermarket units, will be in the US and Europe, based on DSRC and the ITS G5 standard, as well as in Japan. According to STMicroelectronics, a readiness report indicates that V2X is ready for deployment for the purpose of achieving dramatic road safety improvements.

The collaboration combines Autotalks' semiconductor, system, and software experience in V2X with ST's chip-design expertise in areas such as communications and navigation as well as its manufacturing and logistical capabilities.

V2X communication uses wireless technology for information exchange between vehicles and infrastructure. In order to support safety-critical applications, V2X must operate with low latency, high reliability of transmission and reception of wireless signals, secured communication, and accuracy of positioning information. It primarily uses the 5.9GHz band and, with standardisation, the device's interoperability will be enabled.

Autotalks' current V2X chipset comprises an AEC-Q100 communication processor and RF transceiver. By taking advantage of ST's Teseo II and Teseo III single-chip GNSS receivers, the collaboration can apply its technologies into convergence of V2X, telematics, and driver-assistance systems.
