Hypertac has developed a new generation of couplers for the rail industry to manage the increasing volume of data transmissions between a train’s different electronic systems. This includes passenger information, entertainment systems, on-board computers, heating, air-conditioning and safety equipment.
The rectangular modular coupler comprises a combination of signal and high speed contacts, including fibre-optic, to prevent interference and increases transmission speeds. This is particularly vital when placed between coaches in high speed trains, metros and trams.

The coupler’s modular inserts can be equipped with up 60 signal contacts, 12 fibre-optic multimode contacts (50/125 or 62.5/125) and 4 high speed coax, twinax, triax or quadrax contacts and deliver Ethernet transmission speeds up to 1.2 GHz. The rectangular format enables a higher density of contacts versus traditional circular couplers, saving space. Its modular design also enables the contact arrangements inside one connector to change.

The connector's ruggedised aluminium shell gives resistance to the high levels of shock and vibrations associated with rail vehicle applications. It also exceeds the harsh environmental specifications for corrosion resistance, 500 hours of salt spray and sealing, IP66 according to CEI60529.

The connector’s anchoring cable guards also delivers protection to the cables, exceeding 1 million swaying cycles in testing.
