Mobile payments, loyalty points with NFC phones: Pilot at Four Day Marches, Nijmegen

he annual Four Day Marches in Nijmegen, Netherlands, is the largest multi-day walking event in the world, with over 45,000 walkers and over 2.6 million visitors expected in 2012. This year, Connected Loyalty, NXP Semiconductors and the Four Day Festivities Foundation are conducting a unique pilot using smartphones equipped with Near Field Communication.

Using NFC, participants are able to pay, take advantage of discounts, and collect loyalty points while shopping and dining in the Nijmegen town center, with a simple tap of their smartphones — avoiding the need to carry extra paper or plastic loyalty cards everywhere they go. The 100 participants in the pilot are members of ANWB, the Dutch automobile association.
