At embedded world 2022, on the Digi-Key booth, Paige West speaks with Marc Rommerswinkel, Business Development Manager (EMEA), SiC-Power Solutions, Microchip about Microchip’s Silicon Carbide solutions and what makes the company stand out from the crowd.

Microchip can support the customer in every aspect of design, offering comprehensive technical support and guaranteeing product longevity and robustness.

Silicon Carbide is a more robust technology, allowing customers to create smaller end products. Customers can switch much faster, 70% less than classical IGBTs. Being able to switch faster means customers can make things smaller, specifically passive components: capacitors, inductors and transformers. Also, due to better the better thermal behaviour, you can make the heat sink smaller. If the overall system gets smaller, you can switch it faster and perhaps get out of the audio range.

SiC-Power Solutions

Microchip is a supplier in Silicon Carbide technologies, with more than 20 years history with the material and power electronics. With a voltage range of 700V to 3.3kV, Microchip is proud to have MOSFETs with the lowest Rdson (25mOhm) and Diodes with the highest current (90A)

Customers can buy multiple packages from Microchip, including TO, SMD and SOT227 packages, demonstrating a huge range of packages with more to come in the near future.

It also offers power modules to offer customers which can be modified dependent on customer need and fully custom modules, even for lower quantities.

Alongside this, Microchip has digital gate drivers for Silicon Carbide, which compared to classical analog drivers, they aren't turned on and off in one step. It is turned on in steps and turned off in steps, reducing the ringing and finding the balance between switching loses.
