At electronica 2022, on the Digi-Key booth, Caroline Hayes speaks with Helmut Philipowski, Marketing Communications Manager at TDK about PiezoListen technology used in a BoomBox design project.

A collaboration between talented people form art, music and engineering has brought about the flattest boombox ever made.

“We reached out to [Joe Grant] around nine months ago. We love the way he not only presents his content but also his work as an engineer. He is an educator within the hacker community. We wanted to foster his creativity with our components, and he really took a liking to our PiezoListen speakers, the flattest speakers available on the market, and realised his dream project as a reminiscence to the 80s as well as to our heritage,” said Philipowski.

The thickest element is the battery itself.

“A PiezoListen speaker is nine layers of magic, because by applying voltage, you can actually make the Piezo electric element bend in the way you want and this then creates vibration, which then through the PCB board is being amplified,” notes Philipowski.

Joe Grant worked with a couple of creative people out of his circle of friends to realise this project.

It highlights design opportunities but, applications wise, it is specifically used in the automotive industry for dashboard integration.
