The Korea Times reported that the forthcoming tri-fold device has been long-rumoured, with hints dropped at Samsung’s previous Unpacked event in January. It is speculated the product may be named the Galaxy G Fold.
TM Roh, President and Acting Head of the Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics, said the company had a clear vision for the future of smartphone form factors: “I expect we will be able to launch the tri-fold phone within this year.”
Samsung positioned the newly launched Galaxy Z Fold7 as its most advanced foldable yet, citing its lightweight and slim design, increased durability, and its integration of Galaxy AI as core attributes. Weighing 215g and measuring 8.9mm when folded and 4.2mm when unfolded, the Fold7 is being marketed as the company’s thinnest and lightest foldable to date.
“Galaxy Z Fold7 combines Galaxy AI with powerful hardware to deliver our most advanced smartphone experience yet,” said Roh. “This next chapter of foldables brings together design and engineering, with AI built specifically for the foldable form. It gives people the ultra-experience they want – powerful, immersive, intelligent, and portable all in one.”
Larger screens and lighter build
The Galaxy Z Fold7 features a 6.5” Dynamic AMOLED 2X cover display with a 21:9 aspect ratio. When unfolded, it transforms into an 8-inch main display, 11% larger than its predecessor. The main screen, also a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, delivers up to 2,600 nits of peak brightness and supports Vision Booster for outdoor visibility.
Samsung claimed the Fold7 was designed for both portability and productivity, enabling users to edit content, multitask, and view media across a wider screen with fewer distractions. The device runs on One UI 8, based on Android 16, with features tailored to the foldable format.
Durability improvements
The Fold7 introduced a new Armor FlexHinge design, incorporating a multi-rail structure to reduce visible creasing and improve stress distribution. Its outer display uses Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, offering improved crack resistance, while the frame and hinge housing are built from advanced Armor Aluminium for added structural integrity. Internally, the display includes a titanium plate and thicker Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG), now 50% stronger than before.
Powered by Snapdragon, driven by AI
Under the hood, the device runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, delivering a 41% boost in NPU, 38% in CPU, and 26% in GPU performance over the previous generation. This enables faster on-device AI tasks, such as real-time language translation and Generative Edit.
One UI 8 introduces multimodal AI features that respond to typed, spoken, and visual inputs. Users can engage with tools like Drawing Assist and Writing Assist for improved creativity, or use Circle to Search to obtain contextual gaming tips and search results.
Gemini Live, a multimodal AI assistant, enables screen or camera sharing for contextual assistance without switching apps. AI Results View and Drag & Drop functionality allow users to manage multitasking in Multi Window more efficiently.
Samsung framed the Galaxy Z Fold7 as the beginning of a new phase for foldables – one where form factor innovation supports practical AI integration. The upcoming tri-fold device is expected to continue that trajectory, though the company has not yet confirmed a specific release date or specifications.
