IAR, a provider of software solutions for embedded development, has announced its official membership as a silver member of the Zephyr Project, a widely adopted open source RTOS hosted by the Linux Foundation.

This collaboration emphasises IAR’s dedication to bringing professional-grade tools and solutions to the developer community while supporting the advancement of Zephyr RTOS in embedded development.

The open-source Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) Zephyr with its small footprint is specifically suited for resource-constrained embedded devices and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Zephyr is highly secure, versatile and scalable for a wide range of applications from simple home automation sensors to complex industrial controllers.

Being open source, the RTOS benefits from a large community and continued improvements and is supported by the Zephyr Project, a Linux Foundation hosted Collaboration Project, and silicon vendors such as NXP, Analog Devices and Nordic Semiconductor.

In October 2024, during embedded world North America, IAR demonstrated the RTOS awareness plugin for Zephyr, showcasing its seamless integration and advanced debugging capabilities. The demonstration attracted visitors and partners by highlighting how the plugin provides developers with deep insights into the real-time behaviour of their applications, including task monitoring, scheduling, and resource usage. This marks a significant milestone in the company’s journey toward co-existing with open-source ecosystems and creating unique value for customers.

“Joining the Zephyr Project as a Silver Member represents IAR’s commitment to collaborating with the open-source community and leading silicon vendors to provide industry-leading tools for Zephyr developers,” remarked Thomas Andersson, Chief Product Officer at IAR. “Our aim is to bridge the gap between open-source innovation and commercial-grade reliability, empowering developers to create high-quality embedded solutions.”

"We are delighted to welcome IAR as a Silver Member of the Zephyr Project," said Brendon Slade, MCU and MPU Enablement Director at NXP Semiconductors. "As a founding and Platinum Member, NXP places great importance on collaboration within the Zephyr ecosystem to enhance the developer experience for our customers. IAR’s advanced tools will further strengthen the ecosystem, providing developers with advanced capabilities to create high-performance, safe, and scalable solutions on NXP platforms."

“We are excited that IAR has joined the Zephyr Project as a member. Their expertise in embedded development and commercial tools will be a significant enhancement to our ecosystem, enabling developers to create optimised solutions in their projects powered by Zephyr,” added Kate Stewart, Vice President of Dependable Embedded Systems at The Linux Foundation. “IAR’s contributions will further enhance the capabilities and adoption of Zephyr RTOS in domains which require safety certified toolchains, strengthening its position as a go-to solution for embedded development.”

IAR’s full support for the Zephyr RTOS is anticipated to reach production readiness later in 2025, offering developers a powerful toolchain featuring IAR’s signature optimisations, advanced debugging capabilities, and seamless integration with Zephyr.
